A bit about Bath

History

A UNESCO World Heritage Site, Bath’s long and illustrious history begins with the natural hot springs that give the city its name. They led the Romans to build the settlement of Aquae Sulis there in the first Century, to take advantage of the waters. The baths remain a major tourist attraction to this day.

The baths are not, however, the only thing to draw visitors to this historic city. In Medieval times Bath was a major hub for the wool trade. In the Georgian area, it became a leading destination for the wealthy and cultured. Literary names connected with the city include Jane Austen, Mary Shelley and Charles Dickens.

Location and Travel

Situated in the Southwest of England, Bath is well connected to the rest of the country by both road and rail. The M4 motorway connects east to west, allowing direct travel to London or Wales. The M5 provides a north/south link that can carry you further into the West Country. If visiting the city centre by car, it is recommended that you make use of the park and ride facilities.

Bath Spa railway station also offers direct links from London to the Southwest. The city also has good bus and coach links. Bristol Airport is just 20 miles away.

Local Amenities

In keeping with its cultural and literary history, Bath has a large collection of museums and galleries, spanning Roman to Georgian eras as well as covering specific authors such as in the Jane Austen Museum and the House of Frankenstein. History even extends to eating establishments, such as the infamous Sally Lunn’s.

Shopping in Bath ranges from major brands in SouthGate to independent retailers through narrow streets and covered markets. London Road and Walcot Street are known as the Artisan area. Milsom Street and Milsom Place, New Bond Street, Green Street, George Street and Bartlett Street all host a range of different shops selling everything from antiques to high fashion.

Other amenities cover those you would expect in a major city, including libraries, leisure centres and sport facilities, and parks and green spaces. You can also venture out of the city to explore the beautiful Somerset countryside and quaint local villages. Popular walking spots include along the Kennet and Avon Canal.
