A Bit About Lyme Regis

History

Situated on the world famous Jurassic Coast in West Dorset, Lyme Regis is a popular seaside resort and fishing port which is famous for the discovery of many fossils such as Ichthyosaur in 1819 by Mary Anning, as well as a complete Plesiosaur and the well preserved remains of a flying reptile.

Lyme Regis is also where Jane Austen lived in a seaside cottage in 1804 whilst writing her novel “Persuasion”, which is also set in the area. Lyme Regis also has a military history, and indeed earned the Regis element of its name by sheltering the fleet of Edward I in 1284 during his wars against the French.

Location and Travel

With excellent road and rail links, Lyme Regis is 25 miles west of Dorchester and 25 miles east of Exeter, accessible via the M5, A38, A3066, A358, A35, A30, A31, A35 and A3052.

The closest railway station is located at Axminster, six miles from Lyme Regis. From the railway station, bus numbers X51 and X53 will take you straight to the centre of Lyme Regis. For train travellers from London, there is a direct service from London Waterloo whilst visitors from Birmingham and the Midlands will need to change trains at Exeter.

Overseas travellers can easily access Lyme Regis by ferry or catamaran passenger services from France, Spain and the Channel Islands or by air from anywhere in the world into Exeter or Bristol airports.

Local Amenities

Offering both pebble and sandy beaches with a recommendation from the Marine Conservation Society, there is something for everyone to enjoy at Lyme Regis, including a trip to nearby Charmouth for a spot of fossil hunting. Lyme Regis has a lovely promenade running the length of the town along which there is a wide choice of cafes, shops, pubs and restaurants.

Tourists can enjoy boat and fishing trips from the harbour but if you prefer to stay on dry land, the buildings lining the narrow streets of Lyme Regis are a delight to behold for lovers of Georgian architecture, or you could spend a day exploring the Marine Aquarium on the Cobb harbour wall. The aquarium offers an insight into Lyme’s rich maritime history as well as showcasing some of the abundant local sea life.
