A Bit About Brigg

Located in North Lincolnshire, the market town of Brigg is home to more than 5,500 people and numerous small and medium sized businesses operating across a variety of industries.

History

Brigg has been an important local centre for centuries, as it provides both a crossing point over the Ancholme River and direct access to the waterway. Prehistoric boats dating to 900 BCE have been uncovered in the town, as well as evidence of a late Bronze Age jetty that was positioned on the riverside.

Brigg underwent a period of rebuilding and improvement throughout the late 1700s and early 1800s, and a church was constructed soon after in the mid 1840s. Today, the town of Brigg is centred around the marketplace, which is a pedestrianised retail area and a designated Conservation Area due to the number of structures that date from the early 1700s.

Location and Travel

Sitting approximately 140 miles north of London, Brigg is located between a number of larger towns, including Lincoln, Grimsby, Hull, and Scunthorpe.

Brigg Railway Station is served by two trains per day, one running towards Sheffield and the other towards Cleethorpes. The town is also within easy reach of Humberside Airport, which offers flights to a range of destinations, including Amsterdam, Aberdeen, and Palma.

The town benefits from excellent road links, with the A18 running east-west through Brigg and offering connections to the M180 and the A15. There are a number of bus services that serve Brigg, many of which provide easy connections to Scunthorpe.

Local Amenities

Brigg’s economy is centred around the service and retail industries. The marketplace, Bigby Street, Wrawby Street and Bridge Street are home to a number of retail stores, including high street names as well as independent retailers. The area also hosts two general markets each week, as well as a monthly farmers’ market which sells everything from locally grown vegetables to artisan breads, cheeses, and condiments.

The town’s football club, Brigg Town FC, is one of the oldest in the world and was established in 1864. The town is also home to an established rowing club, hosts two annual triathlons and Brigg’s leisure centre offers an array of amenities, including a gym, sports hall, skatepark, field sports area, and swimming pools.

There are a number of other public facilities in the town, including a library, children’s playgrounds, health centres, and a heritage centre.
