A Bit about Lincoln

History

The county town of Lincolnshire currently has a population of around 127,000, but over 2000 years ago, there were just a few wooden Iron Age dwellings at the site. Set close to Brayford Pool, it is thought the name comes from the Celtic word “lindon”, meaning “The Pool”. The Romans built a fortress there, where the proximity to the Rivers Trent and Witham made it an important destination, although it later declined. It was the Normans who built two of the city’s most iconic structures: Lincoln Castle and Lincoln Cathedral.

In 1141 the Battle of Lincoln was fought between Empress Matilda and King Stephen, but the city would soon start to grow, thanks to its production of wool and cloth. It would eventually become the country’s third-largest city. Lincoln was once home to one of England’s largest Jewish communities, before they were expelled from the country in 1290. Eventually, the city declined again, in part because of the Dissolution of the Monasteries. Improvements in agriculture, followed by the Industrial Revolution, saw first the canals, then the trains make the city a bustling hub.

During the First World War, the first British tanks were built in Lincoln. Industry and engineering remained popular for many years, but in the 21st Century, the economy has diversified.
