A Bit about Market Rasen

History

Taking its name from “ræsn”, the Old English word for plank, Market Rasen has been through several variations of its current name since it was mentioned in the Domesday Book: Rase, Rasa, Resne, East Rasa, Rasen Parva and Little Rasen. The plank is probably a reference to a plank bridge (the local river is also called the Rase), and the market comes from the 1219 charter that turned it into a market town. Its heyday was in the 19th Century, with the opening of the Corn Exchange, the arrival of a new theatre that hosted touring theatre companies, the founding of a local newspaper and the birth of the town’s now famous horse races. In 2008, much of England felt the impact of an earthquake that had its epicentre just a few miles from Market Rasen, but no one in the town was hurt. The population of Market Rasen was just under 5,000 in 2021, growing from 3200 at the beginning of the century.

Location and Travel

Market Rasen is in Lincolnshire, in the East Midlands. Lincoln itself is about 13 miles to the southeast, whilst Grimsby is 16 miles northeast. Market Rasen’s railway station opened in 1848 and today offers trains to Lincoln, Grimsby, Newark, Cleethorpes, Nottingham and Leicester. Buses also travel between Market Rasen, Grimsby and Lincoln as well as stopping in Louth, Scunthorpe and other local towns and villages. If travelling by car, be prepared for rural roads, with the most significant local roadway being the B1202.

Local Amenities

Probably the most famous feature of Market Rasen is the Market Rasen Racecourse, which has its own bars and restaurants and can host concerts and events. Nature lovers can enjoy walks in Willingham Woods, a local wildlife park, child-friendly farm park, and open water swimming in a nearby lake. There are also several outdoor adventure facilities. Cyclists can also find plenty of local trails.

Food lovers will find pubs, cafés and restaurants, some of them historic or award-winning, and enjoy purchasing local produce from the market. You can even buy cheese directly from a dairy farm. Market Rasen is full of local and independent shops, such as traditional butchers, bakers and ironmongers. The town has a long history of dressmaking, haberdashery and millinery businesses that continues to this day.
