A bit about Inverness

History

The history of human habitation in Inverness stretches back to the Bronze Age. Before they joined with the Scots to create a united kingdom of Alba (later to become Scotland), it was the capital of the Picts. A large part of Shakespeare’s play “Macbeth” is set around Inverness. Conflict between the Highlands and the Scottish monarchs, between Scotland and Scandinavia and the Crown and the Jacobites all made Inverness a key battleground.

Industries with a long history in Inverness include whisky distilling and shipbuilding. In the modern world, its technology sector has expanded, whilst the tourism industry benefits from nearby Loch Ness. Inverness became a city in 2000.

Location and Travel

Inverness sits in the northernmost part of mainland Scotland, where it is known as the capital of the highlands. It is at the edge of the Moray Firth. Nearby is the infamous Loch Ness, which may or may not be home to some kind of sea monster.

Inverness does have its own airport, which includes regular flights to Heathrow, Gatwick, Luton and Bristol as well as European destinations such as Amsterdam. There are good train and bus links to other Scottish cities including Edinburgh, Glasgow and Perth. The A9 is the main road for travelling to other cities.

Local Amenities

On the east side of the river is Inverness city centre, bordered by Academy Street, Church Street and the High Street. The Victorian Market can be found in Academy Street and hosts a range of independent shops and cafes. The Eastgate Shopping Centre is a major retail area full of high street names.

Parks and open space include the Ness Islands and Bught Park. There are plenty of hiking routes available, including the South Loch Ness Trail. You may also want to go dolphin spotting at Chanonry Point, or by travelling the Moray Firth in a hired boat. Boaters may enjoy sailing the Caledonian Canal.

Facilities for arts and culture include a cinema, theatre and museum as well as a library. Those interested in history may want to visit Inverness Castle, whilst the more horticulturally minded may enjoy Inverness Botanic Gardens.

Football teams include Inverness Caledonian Thistle. There are several golf courses in the area. There is a leisure centre available for a range of different activities and you can also try ice skating at the Ice Centre.
