The changing face of today’s workforce

HR advisors The HR Dept are encouraging British employers to seek a more diverse workforce in order for organisations to foster a new way of thinking.

No one would seriously select new staff based on factors such as age, gender, race, sexual orientation, disability and pregnancy/maternity status. On the other hand, “businesses want talented people working for them and these are defined by their knowledge, skills, drive and energy” says The HR Dept.

“Bringing together different people from different cultural and ethnic backgrounds has huge advantages for employers” claims The HR Dept. “Having a variety of people working for you means that you will have access to a wide spectrum of ideas, thoughts and ways to engage with your customer base”.

“Equality and diversity in the workplace is paramount for any business to ensure that it meets legislative requirements regarding the Equality Act but it should not be undertaken in a ‘tick box’ fashion. It is important that the environment is inclusive and managers may need training to appreciate this aspect.”

A diverse workforce builds creativity and customers do notice this. People from very different backgrounds may approach a problem very differently and reach a solution that others may not have considered.

When you look at a typical workforce, it is very different than how it would have looked only 20 years ago. Naturally, with employment law changes like the removal of the Default Retirement Age, there are challenges. Making reasonable adjustments to enable disabled applicants to join you may seem daunting but you will be rewarded with loyalty and reduced absence if you wholeheartedly celebrate people’s ability.

The HR Dept specialises in advising small and medium sized businesses on all employment issues.
