A Bit About Newark-on-Trent

Newark-on-Trent, also known as Newark, is a civil parish and busy town located on the banks of the Trent in the Newark and Sherwood district of Nottinghamshire. 

Newark – first listed in official sources in the 11th century – may well date back to Roman times, and it later became a centre for the wool and cloth industries, growing around Newark Castle. Its history also shows times of skirmish, including a siege during the English Civil War. Today, the historic marketplace is surrounded by interesting and ancient buildings with plenty of history and many of the town’s most important buildings – such as the town hall – date back to the Victorian Times or earlier.

Location and Travel

Newark is best known for lying on the River Trent which shares its name but the River Devon also traverses the town. Newark is ideally situated for travel, as it sits on the original A1 road and on the East Coast Mainline Railway. Many people who live in the town commute to nearby Nottingham and Lincoln. 

With a population of around 28,000, its main industries include clothing manufacture, sugar refining, pine furniture manufacture, pumps, bearings and farm machinery. Nearby areas include Balderton, Farndon along the A46 and Winthorpe, to the North. It’s about an hour and a half to London by train – and Newark has two railway stations – and just a little longer by car, depending on the route and road conditions.

There is a regular market in the town centre, which also has plenty of high street shops, as well as large supermarkets, department stores and chain stores located in retail parks around the main town itself. Rugby is big in the town and there are plenty of visitor attractions and amenities, including a leisure centre, bowling, cinema, parks and more. The town also has its own orchestra and various bands which play live music at Newark’s entertainment venues. It’s also a great place to enjoy restaurants, cafes and bars, with some highly rated Gastropubs in and around the town.
