A bit about Perth

History

Perth is a city and original burgh in central Scotland which has been a settlement since prehistoric times. Situated on the bank of the River Tay, it is the administrative centre for Perth and Kinross. Nearby ancient stone circles show that Mesolithic tribes lived in the area some 8,000 years ago. Nearby Scone Abbey is famous for being the location at which Scottish kings and queens were crowned.

In the twelfth century, the burgh was one of the richest in the UK, thanks to its European and international trade links, known for its Spanish silk and French wine imports. Today, Perth is a busy tourist city, known as the ‘Gateway to the Highlands’, and it’s also one of Scotland’s notable gastronomic towns with some fantastic restaurants. Another key industry is banking and insurance which has a strong presence in Perth and is a large employer.

Location and Travel

Located on the edge of The Highlands and with easy access to the coast, Perth is also an important transport centre for travel in Scotland and England, and the road network in and around the city is very well linked and easy to access for drivers. For example, the M90 motorway runs from Perth to Edinburgh and then links down to England. The A9 also links the city to Inverness to the North and Glasgow and Stirling.

For rail travel, Perth Railway Station is also very well connected, with regularly scheduled services to Edinburgh Waverley – travelling over the Forth Bridge, Fife, Aberdeen, Dundee, Glasgow Queen Street, Inverness and Stirling. It also has regular fast services to London Euston. However you travel, Perth is well connected to local city hubs, with Glasgow and Edinburgh both only about an hour away.

Local Amenities

The cosmopolitan city of Perth is known for its fine dining, shops, beautiful river scenery, green spaces and culture. It won the Scottish Food Town award in 2018 and has a lively arts scene. Visitors enjoy local attractions such as Perth Concert Hall, Branklyn Garden, the MurraysHall Estate of golf courses, and the Black Watch Castle and Museum. The cafe culture draws in visitors, and there are some excellent hotels for business and tourist visitors alike. Fitness fans will love the cycle routes, walking trails, horse riding centres and sports facilities, and whiskey fans will love the local distilleries with their guided tours and tasting sessions.
