A bit about St Andrews

History

St Andrews gained its name from the town’s claim to be the resting place of the relics of St Andrew the Apostle. Legend has it that the 4th century monk St Regulus brought the saint’s bones to Kilrymont, in Fife, and built a shrine there. Although theories differ as to how the bones ended up on Scottish soil, the town became a strong religious centre and became known as St Andrews.

The town is also known for its celebrated university, dating back to the early 1400s. It was the first university in Scotland and is the third oldest in the English-speaking world. More recently, it has become known as the setting for the love story of Prince William and Kate Middleton, who both graduated there in 2005.

St Andrews is well known as ‘the home of golf’. The Old Course of St Andrews Links frequently hosts The Open Championship, attracting the world’s greatest players. The Royal and Ancient Golf Club of St Andrews is one of the world’s oldest golf clubs and until 2004, was home to the sport’s governing body. St Andrews’ beautiful beaches are part of one of the most iconic film scenes ever as the legendary 1981 film Chariots of Fire was filmed there.
