A Bit About Fareham

Fareham is located next to Gosport in Portsmouth, on the South Coast. Sitting within the pretty county of Hampshire, Fareham is a busy town with plenty of things to see and do, lots of residential areas and many businesses. It’s popular with families, commuters and those living and working across the south coast.

History

Fareham has had a long and interesting history that has tied it closely to Portsmouth itself. Fareham has historically been known for its manufacture of bricks and traditional strawberry growing fields, amongst other things. The town itself dates back to the Norman Era, when Williams’s army marched across Fareham to Winchester, which was England’s Saxon capital at the time. It was listed in the Domesday Book and became a busy commercial centre thanks to its port. Residential building work exploded in the 1960s, and by the 70s it had grown to the point where it almost encompassed surrounding smaller areas such as Titchfield, Funtley, Portchester and Catisfield.

Since 1997 Fareham has been the home of the United Kingdom’s Aeronautical Rescue Coordination Centre (ARCC), at the National Maritime Operations Centre (NMOC), and is responsible for coordinating all maritime & Coastguard Agency Search and Rescue (SAR) helicopters.

Location and Travel

Fareham is a market town located on the northwest edge of historic Portsmouth Harbour. It sits between the two busy cities of Portsmouth and Southampton in Hampshire, making it a popular spot for commuters and families. The full name is the Borough of Fareham. It has its own railway station, which links immediately to Portsmouth and then on to Southampton, London and beyond. Fareham is also on the main motorway network with the A27 and M3 close by, and it also offers plenty of travel options by bus, coach and boat.

Local Amenities

Fareham has a great selection of local cafes, bars, restaurants and independent shops. It has its own shopping centre, theatre and various sports fields, schools and green spaces. It’s a popular area for families and tends to be busy, especially with the seafront so close by.
