A Bit About Portsmouth

Portsmouth is a vibrant port town with a thriving commercial harbour, military presence and seaside with a huge tourist economy. The town centre itself is filled with retail, leisure and entertainment, and Old Portsmouth is a major tourist attraction with historic buildings. Around Portsmouth itself is a busy area filled with businesses and residential areas, including Fratton, Gosport, Havant, Waterlooville, Cosham, Eastleigh and Paulsgrove.

History

Portsmouth has a fascinating history which includes it being the traditional home of the Royal Navy. It was founded in 1180 at Portsea Island and received its first charter in 1194. Over the years, it played a key role in events such as Nelson’s last battle at Trafalgar, the First Fleet to Australia launch, and the D-Day Landings. The ancient town was created in medieval times, and in more modern times, Portsmouth experienced heavy wartime bombing. In recent years, this important strategic, tourist and university city has benefited from extensive redevelopment and investment.

Location and Travel

Portsmouth enjoys a fantastic location and offers plenty of travel options. Portsmouth Harbour is the main railway station, which links to London, Southampton and across the UK. The road network is extensive and includes the A27 and M3, linking with Southampton, Chichester, Winchester, Bournemouth and the whole of the South Coast and beyond.

The city has a busy bus and coach terminal with services covering the whole of Portsmouth itself and the surrounding areas. The city is also largely bike-friendly, with plenty of cycle lanes. Beyond Portsmouth city centre, there are numerous busy residential and business areas, including Eastney, Cosham, Fratton, Waterlooville, Cowplain, Horndean, Emsworth and Gosport.

Local Amenities

Portsmouth and Southsea are packed with amenities. These include university buildings and facilities, green spaces, the Southsea old town and seafront, Commercial Road shopping and retail centre, old Portsmouth with its dockyard and restaurants and the exciting leisure hub of Gunwharf Quays.

Portsmouth has plenty of pubs and bars, cafes and independent shops, clubs and restaurants, and there are regular events and festivals in the city. It is also a great spot for local music, with venues that include the Guildhall, the Wedgewood Rooms and the Pyramids. The Southsea seafront is filled with places to eat, large lawned areas and a fantastic beach.
