A Bit About Southampton

Southampton is a thriving, buzzing port town with an exciting marina, large leisure and retail centre, plenty of culture and a vibrant business community. It’s a great place to set up your own business, with plenty of local hubs, support, grants and advice services for would-be entrepreneurs.

History

Southampton has been a settlement since the Stone Ages, and it has been a key regional hub in Britain for centuries thanks to its favourable geographic location on the English Channel and proximity to both London and Winchester. Queen Elizabeth awarded Southampton with city status in 1964 to mark its importance, however, its strategic role was established in medieval times when it was a thriving port.

Over hundreds of years, Southampton experienced changing fortunes until the Victorians made it into a centre of industrial commerce, as well as an important military site. In recent years, it has benefited from significant investment and rebuilding, especially in the post-war era, when investment was made to remove damaged buildings and to create an exciting new landscape that would attract tourism as well as local visitors.

Location and Travel

Southampton is located in Hampshire, close to Portsmouth, Winchester and London. Southampton railway station connects directly to London and these local cities, in addition to other locations across the south. The main road network includes the M2 and M27, which offer direct routes across the south coast and up to the M40 and M42 to Birmingham. There are plenty of local buses, coaches and trains that make Southampton extremely well connected, not to mention transport by sea, thanks to its harbour.

Local Amenities

Southampton Marina is a major draw as is the city’s main retail and industrial centre which is packed with shops, bars, restaurants, theatres and entertainment. It’s very easy to visit other parts of the South Coast from Southampton, with other marinas nearby, such as Port Solent, offering leisure and recreation. This is a busy and vibrant part of the world with plenty of industrial estates, business parks and residential areas, and Southampton is always growing too, thanks to new investment.
