HMRC seeks powers to investigate furlough fraud

Tuesday June 23, 2020

Did you know that the Government has received over 1800 Whistleblowing claims of ‘Furlough Fraud’ up to the end of May?

A new Bill is being fast tracked through Parliament to tackle allegations of fraud that could give employers a 30 day amnesty to admit their mistake before HMRC come calling.  Don’t forget, if you haven’t yet placed anyone on Furlough for the first time, you have until the end of June to do so.  If you need to bring someone back part-time from Furlough you can start doing that from 1 July.

Whatever you do, make sure that you do it properly and within the rules of the Scheme.

Remember, it’s not just HMRC you may need to worry about if you have not implemented the Furlough Scheme correctly. Placing someone on Furlough requires a change to someone’s contract of employment and can have implications for example on how you manage annual leave, sickness absence reporting and notice.

If you think you need advice on Furlough or simply want to get your ‘Furlough house in order’ then please get in touch.
