A Bit About Botley

Botley is a charming village in Hampshire with a rich and ancient history. Described by journalist and politician William Cobbett as the world’s most delightful village back in the 18th century, it is a highly desirable residential area today and a historic crossing point on the River Hamble.

History

King Henry III gave Botley its market charter in 1267, and it’s still a busy market town today. Key industries that sprang up over the years included coaching inns, travel and the strawberry growing industry. The village probably dates back to Roman times, when it was an important crossing point on the river. The river has played a vital part in its development over the years, particularly with regard to its hospitality industries and market, which included a large cattle market in medieval times.

Location and Travel

Travel is easy in Botley thanks to the nearby A34, which connects Botley to Winchester and Southampton. Southampton airport is less than an hour away, and the village itself has plenty of buses. There is also a railway station in Botley which provides access to services between Fareham and Eastleigh with regular connections to London, around 78 miles away. Popular local areas to Botley include Curdridge, Boorley Green, Shirrell Heath, Wickham, Tapnage, and Hedge End. The M27 is close by, offering easy access across the South Coast and fast routes into Southampton and Portsmouth.

Local Amenities

Botley is a beautiful village in its own right and filled with pretty cafes, gastropubs, walks and independent shops. It’s a natural base for exploring the surrounding countryside, including the South Downs and South coast, with Botley Manor Farm and Country Park a popular local attraction with 400 acres of beautiful woodland to explore. Botley also has some great restaurants, sports clubs and local interest clubs, in addition to surrounding golf clubs and Solent water.
