A Bit About Sutton Courtenay

Sutton Courtenay is a beautiful village in Oxfordshire, known for being the resting place of George Orwell. But it is also a busy village for commuters and a great spot for businesses.

History of Sutton Courtenay

Sutton Courtenay is located on the banks of the River Thames, and it’s been a settlement since records began, thanks to its freshwater access and surrounding rich soil which was perfect for agriculture. The first encampment was believed to have been around 4000 BC by Neolithic settlers, and archaeologists have found many signs of later Iron Age farmsteads and Roman occupation.

The river of Appleford lies close by. The village was first recorded in writing in AD688 when the new monastery was built at nearby Abingdon. By 1086, the Domesday Book recorded Sutton Courtenay as having river meadows, mills and woodlands. Over the centuries, it continued to evolve and become developed, until modern times when it has become a highly desirable village for commuters in the city.

Location and Travel in Sutton Courtenay

The village of Sutton Courtenay is around three miles away from the busy town of Didcot and two miles away from Abingdon and is located on the B4016. Appleford-on-Thames and Drayton sit on either side of the village.

Oxford is just up the A34, and nearby towns and villages include Wantage, Grove, Benson, Wallingford, Goring and Watlington. Travel to London takes about an hour and ten minutes by car, or you can take the train from Didcot in just under an hour. Sutton Courtenay has a regular bus service, and it’s easy to access the nearby A and B roads from the village.
