History

The town of Bridport has a very long history, with its roots reaching back as far as Saxon times. When Alfred The Great was King, the town was one of the key settlements in the Dorset region, with its own fortifications and mint being built there. By 1086, the town was recorded in the Domesday Book as Brideport, and had 120 houses. It grew over the years, and was awarded its Royal Charter in 1253.

With a long tradition of rope and net making, the surrounding land was originally used to grow the flax and hemp required in their construction. The traces of this industry can still be seen today, for example in Bridport’s main street which is unusually wide due to its use as the location in which the ropes were dried after having been spun.

Location and Travel

Bridport is found in the county of Dorset and is located approximately 14 miles west of Dorchester and 33 miles east of Exeter. It lies just one and a half miles from the English Channel. To reach Bridport, there are good road links, including the A35 trunk road, which passes the town centre, and M5 may be reached via the B3162 and A358 roads, although the nearest motorway junction is Junction 25, found 32 miles away.

The nearest railway stations are in Maiden Newton, Crewkerne, Dorchester and Axminster and there is a bus route which links the town with these stations. The closest airports are at Bournemouth and Exeter.

Local Amenities

Football fans will enjoy watching their local football team Bridport F.C., who are known as “The Bees”, with other popular sports taking place including water polo, with matches held annually in the outer harbour at West Bay in a tradition stretching back to 1898. The town is also home to one of just 27 “real tennis” courts in the UK.

The town is also a haven for culture lovers, with a number of festivals to its name. The Bridport Literary Festival has been operating since 2005 and regularly attracts big names and the town also runs a yearly “open studios” event featuring local artists. Meanwhile, the Bridport Carnival offers a wonderful spectacle for all to enjoy.
