HR Consultant in Sherborne

History

Located in the beautiful county of Dorset, Sherborne is a traditional market town with plenty of fascinating history. It was originally given the name of Scir Burne by the Anglo Saxons who inhabited it during the early Middle Ages, due to the presence of a “clear stream” which runs through the centre of the town. It can be seen recorded in the Domesday Book under this early name.

The first Bishop Of Sherborne, St. Aldhelm, was granted an abbey by King Ine in 705, and this abbey later became the burial location for the two Anglo Saxon kings, who were the elder brothers of King Alfred The Great. By 1075, Sherborne Abbey had become a Benedictine monastery, but it was damaged by fire during the tensions of 1437. Today, some of the Norman structure can still be viewed.

Bishop and Chancellor of England, Roger de Caen, built a fortified palace in Sherborne during the 12th century, but this was unfortunately destroyed during the Civil War. Later, Sir Walter Raleigh built what came to be known as Sherborne Castle in its grounds.
