History

Weymouth is well known for its Georgian period charm, but its history stretches back as far as the 10th century. Thanks to its sheltered bay, by the mid 13th century, Weymouth was already an established sea port, with the main import being wine. This was also the point where the Black Death plague is thought to have entered the UK. The old settlement of Weymouth was amalgamated with its neighbouring Melcombe Regis in 1571, and the town continued to expand into local villages over time. In the Georgian era, Weymouth became a popular tourist destination, with the King himself summering there regularly. More recently, Weymouth was the setting for the yacht racing during the London 2012 Olympics.

Location And Travel

Seven miles south of the town of Dorchester, Weymouth is located in the south west of the county of Dorset, with a sheltered coastline at the mouth of the River Wey. The third largest town in the county, Weymouth is exceeded in size only by Bournemouth and Poole. Weymouth is well connected with a railway station offering direct links to London, Bristol and Gloucester, and the town also enjoys good bus links to nearby areas such as Lyme Regis. For road travellers, Weymouth may be reached by the A354, whilst the nearest motorway junction is Junction 1 of the M27. Weymouth is also connected to the Isle of Portland by Chesil Beach, which runs for 18 miles from West Bay to Portland.

Local Amenities

Those who enjoy wild swimming, surfing, or simply a good time with a bucket and spade, will be well served by the stunning beaches in the area. Regularly voted one of the top ten beaches in Europe, Weymouth Beach is a must-visit, and it also holds a Blue Flag rating for water cleanliness. Plenty of events are held each year in the town, including a fireworks festival, whilst fans of sport will have a varied selection including beach volleyball, moto-cross and dragon boat racing to choose from. History buffs can visit the Weymouth Museum or Nothe Fort, which was a coastal fort between 1872 to 1956. Meanwhile, shoppers can enjoy browsing a good range of both independent and chain stores.
