A bit about Dundee

History

Dundee has been the site of human settlement since the Mesolithic period, some 15,000 years ago. By the Middle Ages, it had developed into a major trading port and was later a site of strategic significance in the military and political struggles of the 15th and 16th centuries between Scotland and England. The rapid growth of its textiles, marmalade and newspaper industries during the Industrial Revolution turned it into the city of ‘jute, jam and journalism’.

Location and Travel

Sitting on the north bank of the Firth of Tay in the heart of Tay Country, Dundee is Scotland’s fourth largest city, home to 150,000 people. Set in the most populous part of the country, Dundee occupies a special place. It has all the benefits of a major city including an airport which is within walking distance of the city centre, rail services throughout the countryside as well as the famed Caledonian Sleeper service to London. Road links are fast and plentiful with the M6, M74, M8 and M80 all feeding into the A90.

Local Amenities

Dundee is not only the sunniest city in Scotland, but it also competes with Edinburgh and Glasgow as a major centre for culture, art, science and entertainment. It has been officially recognised by UNESCO as a City of Design and is home to the sister museum of London’s world-famous Victoria & Albert on Riverside Esplanade.

Maritime history is well served by Discovery Point on Riverside Drive, home of the Antarctic expeditionary ship, as well as the HMS Unicorn on South Victoria Dock Road. The Museum of Transport just off Market Street and Broughty Castle, a little way along the river, shed light on other aspects of Dundee’s rich history. Special tours of all descriptions will introduce you to some of Dundee’s many other historical treasures.

For shoppers, Dundee is replete with retail malls and food courts while dozens of independent shops and cafes thrive on Bank Street, Reform Street and the High Street itself. There is plenty of evening entertainment to be had at Dundee’s comedy clubs, bars and night clubs, while theatrical performances are staged in venues of all sizes, from the grand Dundee Rep in Tay Square and Caird Hall overlooking City Square to the intimate spaces of Broughty Ferry’s Gardyne Theatre and Beat Generator Live! on North Lindsay Street.

Dundee also enjoys vast areas of parkland and open countryside, including Camperdown Wildlife Centre and Park and the Dundee Law with its stunning 360-degree views of the city and. Just along the firth is the beautiful sandy beach of Broughty Ferry.
