A bit about East Lothian

History

Known as Haddingtonshire until 1921, the habitation of East Lothian can be traced back to ancient times. Legend has it that the Scottish flag itself was created in the year 823, following a battle between the Picts and the Angles in Athelstaneford. Other notable battles in this region include the Battle of Prestonpans in 1745, where the exiled Charles Edward Stuart defeated a government army in less than half an hour by using the famous Highland Charge.

The famous author Robert Louis Stevenson spent his summers in East Lothian as a child, and his childhood memories of North Berwick’s landmarks make an appearance in his classic novels Kidnapped and Catriona. North Berwick is of geological interest, too, with two of its well-known sites, Bass Rock and Berwick Law, being the remains of ancient volcanoes.

Location And Travel

East Lothian is a coastal region to the South East of Scotland, and only two of its towns (Haddington and Tranent) are situated away from the Southern banks of the Firth of Forth. East Lothian may be reached by the dual carriageway A1, which links the area to Edinburgh and the Scottish Borders. The A199 is the other major trunk road to cross the East Lothian region, and there are seven railway stations in the county. A network of bus routes also provides public transportation for residents.

Local Amenities

East Lothian is traditionally known for its agriculture, with farmland comprising a staggering 88% of the county. Today, however, the region is perhaps more closely associated with its thriving culture of golf. The county boasts 21 golf courses, including the Musselburgh links which is the world’s oldest surviving course. And those who plan a golfing holiday in what is popularly known as “Scotland’s Golf Coast” should not be disappointed by the weather: East Lothian enjoys more sun and less rainfall than anywhere else in the country.

Other amenities include shopping and dining, and there are plenty of cultural venues to explore, ranging from the Museum of Flight at East Fortune to the Prestongrange Industrial Heritage Museum. Nature lovers can spend time at the Scottish Seabird Centre in North Berwick. The famous Edinburgh Malt is actually distilled in East Lothian, proving that this area is a great choice for whisky aficionados.
