A bit about Edinburgh

History

The city of Edinburgh began life in prehistoric times, before a small hillfort was established in the early Middle Ages, most likely at Castle Rock. The Romans built a fort in this area, too, which was connected to their stronghold in York by the long Roman Road known as Dere Street. Between the seventh and tenth centuries AD the settlement here went on to become a part of the Anglian Kingdom of Northumbria.

From this time on, Edinburgh has been the seat of Scottish royalty, with its royal charter awarded in the twelfth century. Playing a pivotal role in establishing the Protestant religion in the sixteenth century, Edinburgh went on to become a major financial hub in the eighteenth century, and continues to be a global banking power today. Until the beginning of the nineteenth century, Edinburgh was Scotland’s largest city, and it was made home to the devolved Scottish Parliament in the 1990s.

Location And Travel

Located in the county of Midlothian in the South East of Scotland, Edinburgh enjoys superb transport links to the rest of the country, and the wider UK. Edinburgh’s busy international airport is conveniently situated a short distance outside the city at Ingliston. For motorists, the main A7, A701, A702 and A68 roads provide excellent commuter links to the North and South of the city. Meanwhile, the M8 motorway to the north affords swift access to the western side of the country.

Edinburgh has excellent national and local rail links, too, with Waverley Station second only to London’s Waterloo in terms of size. The city also boasts an extensive bus network and tram system, as well as many dedicated cycle routes.

Local Amenities

Edinburgh is rightly considered a cultural powerhouse, and is home to the National Galleries of Scotland, as well as its famous annual festival. History buffs are also well served by the city, with many attractions to explore, ranging from the subterranean Mary King’s Close to Edinburgh Castle (itself a draw for film fans thanks to its role as Hogwarts in the Harry Potter films). Meanwhile, Edinburgh Zoological Gardens allows the chance to glimpse rare Giant Pandas, with the only pair currently in the UK living here. With fine dining, plentiful green spaces and parks, and excellent shopping on the renowned Princes Street, Edinburgh offers a wealth of entertainment, whatever you enjoy.
