A bit about Midlothian

History

Known as Edinburghshire until the early twentieth century, the Midlothian area has been inhabited since prehistoric times, with the remains of early forts still to be found on a number of its hilltops. Roman settlements have been discovered at Inveresk and Cramond, too, indicating the presence of a major Roman road running through the area to the north.

The city of Edinburgh in Midlothian became the Scottish capital in the 15th Century, but the capital of the county is in fact Dalkeith, which remains its administrative hub. The county has seen its fair share of key events, including the first Scottish Battle of Independence, which took place at Roslin in 1303. As a result, there are many architectural and historical wonders to be found in the region. With a great many castles, ecclesiastical buildings and battle sites to visit, Midlothian certainly provides rich resources for anyone interested in the past.

Location And Travel

Located in the South East of Scotland, just to the South of the Firth of Forth, Midlothian offers excellent transport links to the rest of the country and the wider UK. The famous Forth Bridge carries 200 trains across each day, whilst a road bridge nearby serves motorists. Edinburgh airport is easily reached from the city itself, and the main A7, A701, A702 and A68 roads provide excellent commuter links for residents or those travelling from further afield. Meanwhile, the M8 motorway to the north affords swift access to the western side of the country.

Local Amenities

The council area of Midlothian comprises 137 square miles, and much of this land is laid to suburban and rural spaces. It’s an ideal location for country lovers, with rolling hills, river valleys and woodland to explore. With Edinburgh providing world-class theatre, arts and cultural events, including its famous annual festival, the region draws high volumes of tourists each year. Midlothian also boasts a prominent electronics manufacturing industry, and farming continues to play a major role.

There is plenty to enjoy about living in Midlothian, with great shopping, nightlife and outdoor pursuits to be found throughout the towns and countryside. The Midlothian Snowsports Centre on Biggar Road in Hillend is a popular draw for fans of skiing and snowboarding, whilst the Vogrie Country Park at Gorebridge runs events and activities for all of the family.
