A Bit About Belgravia

History

Originally known as the Five Fields, Belgravia began as a rural area where cattle were grazed. Indeed, the fields here were quick to gain quite a reputation for travellers following a number of violent robberies by highwaymen. It was also a popular location for gentlemen from the Capital who wished to settle their differences with a dangerous duel.

Later, the Five Fields area became more popular as a residential community, and by the early 19th century, it had begun to take the form that we recognise today. Grand stucco-style terraced properties were built, and the familiar landmark addresses of Eaton Square, Belgrave Square, and Grosvenor Place were established. Belgravia earned its new name, too, as the new owner of the Five Fields land (the Marquess of Westminster) decided to rename it after the village of Belgrave, which was close to his family seat in Cheshire.

Location and Travel

Belgravia is part of the London Borough of Westminster, Kensington and Chelsea and is situated in the South West portion of the city. It is south of Knightsbridge and Hyde Park, and southwest of Mayfair and Green Park, whilst the City of Westminster lies to the West.

There are excellent transport links to Belgravia, which means that you can easily access other parts of London, or escape the city entirely. There are two major roads (the A4 and the London Inner Ring Road) running by Belgravia, which makes travelling convenient for drivers looking to visit other parts of the city. Meanwhile, those who prefer public transport will also find that it is easy and convenient to travel from Belgravia. There are numerous buses that run to and from the area, as well as London Underground stations at Hyde Park Corner, Sloane Square, and Knightsbridge. Those who wish to take the train or coach have only a short distance to travel to Victoria Station, which lies just to the east of Belgravia, and provides national rail and coach connections.

Local Amenities

There is plenty to enjoy when you live or work in Belgravia. This district is now associated with high-end dining and shopping, offering many luxury experiences. From stores carrying the most coveted designer brands in interiors and fashion, to restaurants offering sumptuous menus from around the globe, Belgravia certainly makes the ideal place to treat yourself, and it is home to several famous hotels, such as the Lanesborough, for those wanting to make a weekend of it.

Belgravia is also well known for its superb collection of art galleries, making it the perfect destination for art connoisseurs looking to check out an exhibition. Meanwhile, it’s easy to get outdoors and enjoy the fresh air with Hyde Park on the doorstep.
