A bit about Farringdon

History

The name “Farringdon” can be found in numerous locations around the UK. In the case of the London district, it is probably a reference to two prominent local citizens, the 13th Century politicians William and Nicholas de Farringdon (whose surnames often changed in spelling), who may have previously lived in one of the other Farringdon areas. It did not become an area of note until Farringdon Street was built on top of the newly covered Fleet River.

It underwent major and sometimes chaotic changes during the Industrial Revolution, including new warehouses and foundries. A local market developed and eventually would specialise in second-hand books. In the 20th Century, office buildings sprang up, and The Guardian newspaper made Farringdon its headquarters. Its location near the financial hub of the City makes its residential apartments popular, and has led to the growth of a bar and club scene.

Location

Farringdon is a relatively small district, historically part of Clerkenwell, in the larger Burrough of Islington, in North London. Its eponymous station is one of the central features of the district and has made the area one of London’s main transport hubs. Originally the terminus of the Underground’s Metropolitan Line, it is now also part of the Circle Line, the Hammersmith and City Line, Thameslink and most recently, Crossrail’s Elizabeth Line. Its National Rail Services run to Gatwick Airport, Brighton, Luton, Bedford, Cambridge, Peterborough and more. The Elizabeth Line offers trains to Heathrow Airport, London Paddington, and Reading. The area also has frequent bus services.

Other Amenities

Not in the heart of the City, but in close proximity, Farringdon has a thriving nightlife scene without being quite as loud and brash as its neighbouring areas. Clubs, pubs, bars and restaurants are numerous. You are only a short Tube ride from the Barbican concert venue. Visitors will easily find accommodation in local hotels. Leather Lane may not sell very much leather today, but it still has a traditional street market.

If you’re more interested in the area’s history, there are museums (including a museum of pathology), whilst Postman’s Park hosts a memorial to Londoners who sacrificed themselves for others. There are also old churches and other historic buildings, including the iconic Old Bailey criminal court, just a short distance away. The famous Smithfield Market is nearby.
