A Bit About Holborn

History

Holborn is thought to have been occupied since at least the 10th Century, with evidence of human habitation existing in the form of ancient documents referencing the parish church of St Andrew Holborn.

The main road from Holborn to central London was paved with funding directly from King Henry VII in 1494 to afford his carriage safe passage and to ensure that criminals being transported for hanging at Tyburn or St Giles would not be delayed by unfavourable road conditions.

Holborn is an area that was unscathed by the Great Fire of London in 1666 and was briefly home to renowned author Charles Dickens.

Location and Travel

Holborn is a district in central London, spanning the South-Eastern sector of Camden and the Ward of Farringdon Without. It is well served by rail and road links, with the A40 and A5200 running directly through the district, and Chancery Lane, Farringdon and Covent Garden tube stations within easy walking distance and allowing rapid transit to Paddington and the rest of the city of London.

Holborn is approximately an hour’s drive or train journey from London Heathrow Airport, using either the A40 and M5 roads or the Elizabeth line from Farringdon to Heathrow Terminal 5. London Gatwick Airport can also be accessed by road or rail, with the M25 providing easy access, whilst rail travel is made possible through the use of the Farringdon to Brighton Thameslink line.

Local Amenities

Holborn is a thriving district, close to the centre of the City of London, with easy access to many noted amenities, including Covent Garden, the Royal Opera House, the British Museum, the River Thames and the London Eye.

Holborn is an area that is in economic growth and is home to a number of independent shops, cafes and restaurants as well as many well known household name shops and supermarkets, including Waitrose, Tesco and Sainsbury’s.

Holborn is best known for its links to the legal industry, and the many families of children undergoing treatment at Great Ormond Street Hospital find overnight accommodation to be plentiful in this area.
