A Bit About Kensington

Kensington forms part of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea and is located just under three miles away from Central London. The area is surrounded by an array of popular London boroughs, including Mayfair, Shepherd’s Bush and Marylebone. Unsurprisingly given its central location, this bustling part of the capital is home to many commercial businesses and enterprises as well as a selection of major cultural landmarks that attract locals and visitors alike throughout the year.

History

Kensington has seen many notable people pass through its streets over the centuries. In fact, the manor of Kensington was one of many areas granted to Geoffrey de Montbray, who was one of the wealthiest men in the country, by William the Conqueror following the end of the Norman Conquest.

The area has historically been important to the military and was home to the Kensington Barracks, which were located at Kensington Gate and constructed towards the end of the 18th century to accommodate several regiments of the cavalry. The barracks were replaced in 1858, however, these too were demolished in the early 1970s and, following a period of redevelopment, eventually became Lancer Square.

Location and Travel

Three main roads run through Kensington, including the A4 Cromwell Road, which offers connections to Hounslow, Heathrow Airport, and Central London. Kensington Road links the area with Hammersmith, and Fulham Road provides connections with Fulham, which is south-west of Kensington.

High Street Kensington, South Kensington, and Gloucester Road stations are all within Zone 1 and form part of the Circle line. These stations are also served by different branches of the District line. Gloucester Road and South Kensington are also positioned on the Piccadilly Line, linking Kensington with the West End, Heathrow Airport, Chiswick, and Ealing. The western part of Kensington is also served by Kensington (Olympia) station and is located within Zone 2.

Kensington is served by a selection of bus routes, with key hubs located on Kensington High Street and South Kensington.

Local Amenities

Kensington High Street is the main shopping street in the area, with a selection of independent and larger stores, restaurants, bars, and more. In addition to major shopping streets, visitors can also enjoy a selection of cultural hubs, including the Design Museum, the Science Museum, the Natural History Museum, and the Royal Albert Hall.

Kensington Gardens sit adjacent to the main area of Kensington, which is a beautiful open space within Hyde Park and is close to the Italian Gardens, the Serpentine Gallery, a lido, and the Albert Memorial. Visitors can also enjoy a selection of other open spaces, including Holland Park, which is home to an outdoor gym, an adventure playground, and the Kyoto Japanese garden with its picturesque pond and waterfall.
