A bit about Marylebone

From an ancient parish to a modern, upmarket district in London’s West End, Marylebone has a long history. The name is from St Mary’s Church, plus the nearby “bourne”, or stream. It wasn’t until the 17th Century that a French-style “le” was added, as was fashionable at the time.

When it was a parish, Marylebone was associated with the manors of Lileston and Tyburn, both named in the Domesday Book. The land passed through a number of hands, including the Knights Templar, the Order of Knights of the Hospital of Saint John in Jerusalem, and the Earl of Oxford before reaching Henry VIII, who set aside what would later become Regent’s Park as a deer park. It was in the 1700s that the areas started to urbanise. Marylebone Gardens became the leisure spot for dubious pastimes including prize fighting and bear baiting.

Marylebone is important to cricketing history, with Marylebone Cricket Club hosting the sport’s governing body. Famous local residents range from poet Lord Byron to inventor Charles Babbage, author Charles Dickens, artist J. M. W. Turner, musician and Beatles member Paul McCartney and actor and comedian Norman Wisdom.

Location and Travel

Located in London’s City of Westminster, Marylebone is on several bus routes and has its own eponymous mainline train station with regular services to Birmingham, Oxford and High Wycombe. Marylebone sits on the Bakerloo line between Baker Street and Edgware Road.

Baker Street is another local Tube station on the Bakerloo (between Marylebone and Regent’s Park), Circle (between Great Portland Street and Edgware Road), Hammersmith and City, Jubilee (between Bond Street and St John’s Wood) and Metropolitan lines.

As well as Marylebone High Street and Marylebone Lane, well-known roads include Baker Street, Gloucester Road, Harley Street, Wimpole Street, Chiltern Street, New Cavendish Street, Mansfield Street and Portland Place.

Local Amenities

It may have a reputation as a quiet oasis amidst London’s bustle, but Marylebone is still packed with independent and boutique businesses that make it a popular destination for eating, drinking and shopping.

As home to Harley Street, Marylebone is a sought-after destination for people seeking specialist medical services. Baker Street houses the Sherlock Holmes Museum. Other major tourist attractions include Madame Tussauds, the Wallace Collection, several historic churches and buildings, and museums of both anaesthesia and dentistry.

Shopping is centred around Marylebone High Street, a quieter alternative to Oxford Street that includes a famous book shop and many independent boutiques. The district also has several hotels, pubs, restaurants and cafés. It even has a Sunday farmer’s market. Live music and events take place at Wigmore Hall. The closest large green space is Regent’s Park, but there are smaller patches of green too.
