Overview:
This one-day in-person fully-funded event by GM Business Growth Hub for businesses in Greater Manchester is designed for business owners, directors, and managers to understand the essentials, upcoming Labour government fundamental changes to employment law, and key HR practices. Learn how to effectively manage the employee journey from hiring to exit, avoid legal risks, and implement good people practices that boost business success.
This workshop will cover:
What is HR
- Exploring what is HR /people management, where is your business and where do you want/need to be?
The Employee Journey
- From hiring to leaving and key stages in between
- The importance of getting employment status right, effective recruitment and induction, managing absence, disciplinary and grievance and good people management practices to engage and retain employees
Employee Relations and the Legal Framework
- Updates in employment law with proposed fundamental Labour Government changes
- Employee relations and the changing world of work
- Principles of The Equality Act 2010 in practice (types of discrimination), data protection, GDPR and employee privacy notices
- Understanding fair reasons for dismissal and where you can face risk in employment tribunal claims
Policies and Compliance
- Statutory policies that you legally need to have in place
- Good practice HR policies for a future world of work
Enhancing the Work Experience
- Employee wellbeing (physical, mental, financial) initiatives

Presenter:
Jill Bottomley – FCIPD, BSc (Hons)
Jill is a highly experienced HR professional with 35 years of strategic and operational expertise. She holds a degree in Management and is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD).
Jill is regularly invited by the CIPD to attend national roundtables, representing the ‘HR voice of SMEs’, contributing to recommendations made to Government and national policy proposals. She also writes and reviews people management guides.
Jill sits as a voluntary Director on the Board of the Hamblin Education Trust (Altrincham Grammar School for Boys and North Cestrian School) and is a Governor on the Board of the Trafford and Stockport College Group.
