A Bit About Clevedon

History

In 1825, the Elton family who owned the land either leased or sold off small plots to locals to build properties to live in. This created a rapid expansion, which continued apace when business people from the nearby city of Bristol began building large properties to provide them and their families with access to beaches.

Clevedon became more accessible in the 1890s when the railway was established, and by the 1970s, when the M5 motorway reached the location, the seaside town experienced a boom. The town still pays homage to its Victorian roots, with a bandstand, pier and ornamental gardens being key landmarks.

Location and Travel

Clevedon is a coastal town in North Somerset, nestled in beautiful countryside alongside the Severn estuary and in between the cities of Bristol and Devon. The town is easily accessed via the M5 motorway and boasts excellent rail links, as Yatton Station, only 4 miles away, is on the main Bristol to Exeter line.

There are regular bus services running between Clevedon and Bristol, Weston Super Mare, Nailsea and Portishead and Bristol International Airport is only 9 miles away by road. This superb location makes it a popular place for commuters to live.

Local Amenities

Clevedon is best known for its stunning Victorian pier which is at the end of the town’s half-mile long beach and which has featured in many films and television series. On a clear day, it is possible to see across the Severn estuary to Wales.

Clevedon’s town centre is bustling and hosts many independent shops, restaurants and pubs as well as regular farmer’s markets and street markets. There are many large supermarkets in the area, several churches and plenty of choice of health practitioners, including dentists and opticians.

Clevedon is proud to be home to Britain’s oldest, continuously operated cinema, the Curzon Cinema, which shows new film releases at least once a day. When not shopping or watching films, Clevedon locals can enjoy a raft of sporting activities, and the six primary schools in the town offer plenty of choice to residents.
