A Bit About Long Ashton

This North Somerset village is located just outside the city of Bristol, which means that it is ideally positioned to provide residents and businesses with the best of both the area’s scenic countryside and bustling city environments.

History

Artefacts from as far back as prehistoric times have been unearthed in the local area, and some of Long Ashton’s significant settlements date to Roman and Saxon times.

Interestingly, merchant and later Sheriff of Bristol Richard Amerike, whose name is a potential source of the name America, purchased shares in Long Ashton’s manor house in the late 15th century before the Smyth family became principal landowners and remained lords of Long Ashton for the next 400 years.

Agriculture has played a significant role throughout the history of Long Ashton, and several working farms remain in the area today. The village also has a long industrial history, including being home to several mills and stone quarries.

Location and Travel

Weston Road merges into Long Ashton Road, and runs through the entirety of the village, offering easy access to the many different attractions, amenities and facilities within the local area.

A number of First Group buses serve Long Ashton, including the X7, X8, and X9 badgerline services, which connect the village with the likes of Bristol city centre, Clevedon and Nailsea.

Local Amenities

As Long Ashton is located just to the west of Bristol, locals and visitors alike can benefit from the plethora of nearby attractions, including the Clifton Suspension Bridge and the annual Bristol International Balloon Fiesta held on the Ashton Court Estate and positioned to the east end of Long Ashton.

Nearby Leigh Woods, which is owned by the National Trust, is just one of many green spaces that can be enjoyed, as well as Dawson Walk, which is a two-hour circular countryside and woodland walk that was donated to the people of Long Ashton. Other green spaces and play areas include Kings Croft Playground on Fishers Mead and Peel Park, which can be reached via Kings Croft or Keeds Lane.

Weston Road is home to a variety of local amenities for residents, including convenience stores, hairdressers, cafes, and pubs, together with a village shop and post office.

There are plenty of opportunities for all ages to get involved in sports as the local area is home to a football club, rugby club, and has a range of facilities, including basketball courts and a Taekwondo studio. Long Ashton is also popular amongst golfers, as the area is home to several courses and country clubs.
