A Bit About Nailsea

History

Nailsea is traditionally a coal mining town, situated in South West England within the North Somerset unitary authority. Prior to becoming an established supplier of coal to nearby Yatton, the town was a key source of pennant sandstone excavations in Roman times, with evidence of this quarrying activity existing to this day.

English Heritage protects the remains of the Elms Colliery in Nailsea, which is an excellent example of an 18th-century colliery. Other evidence of its former mining activity is still evident today, although the mines have been closed for a number of years.

After the demise of the coal mines, the town rose to fame for its links to glass blowing, with the Nailsea Glassworks becoming the fourth-largest organisation of its kind in the UK. Whilst the works closed in 1873, Nailsea glass is still much sought after by collectors.

Location and Travel

Nailsea is situated in South West England, between Bristol and Devon and within easy reach of Portishead and Clevedon. It is well served by transport links, with Bristol Airport less than 10 miles away and the M5 within easy reach.

The town is a short drive from Weston-Super-Mare and Brean, both of which are tourist hotspots with pleasant sandy beaches.
