A Bit About Portishead

Portishead is a busy town in North Somerset, England. Its population is around 27,000 people. It’s a thriving local centre for business, commerce and industry, with a Chamber of Commerce, strong support for local businesses and plenty of independent ventures.

History

Portishead was first recorded in Roman times and was, for years, a fishing port. Its principal architecture is Victorian, and the town centre has beautiful old buildings and cottages which share its ancient history. The town became a seaside resort in the early nineteenth century when it was very popular with Bristol families and business people. Industry also began to grow at this time, with the construction of a deep-water dock in 1836. The town’s industries flourished until the 1970s, when power stations and industrial plants began to power down, and the town centre became a major visitor centre with its own marina, bars, cafes, digital businesses, retail outlets and more.

Location and Travel

Portishead is situated on the side of the Severn Estuary, opposite Newport and Cardiff in Wales. It’s just 8 miles away from Bristol and 18 miles from Weston-super-Mare. It’s easy to travel around, as the town is just a ten-minute drive from J19 of the M5. It takes around 20 minutes to drive to Bristol City Centre. Bristol International Airport is around 11 miles away. The town is also on a busy bus route that runs to and from Bristol and nearby villages and towns, including Nailsea, Abbots Leigh, Portbury, Yatton and Winford. There are plans to reopen the Portishead branch line as part of wider rail network improvements in the area.

Local Amenities

Portishead is North Somerset’s second largest town, and it’s in a beautiful coastal spot with rolling wooded hills opposite the channel. Attractions centre around the town and seafront, including a boating lake, open-air swimming pool, water sports facilities, modern harbour and thriving town centre.
