A Bit About Battersea
History
Now famed for its vibrant architecture, markets and green spaces, Battersea is an area steeped in history. Known during the mediaeval period as Batricheseie, the location has served a multitude of purposes over the past few hundred years. Most notably, Battersea is home to the historic St Mary’s Church and the now disused Battersea Power Station, a striking display of art deco design and an homage to the city’s industrial past.
Today, Battersea is home to a plethora of creative industries, with the Royal College of Art situated a stone’s throw south of the river. Though the area is focused on future development and growth, the old village and church serve as a reminder of its rich heritage.
Location and Travel
Nestled just south of the River Thames in London’s zone two, Battersea is easily accessible via the recently finished Northern Line extension. With easy access to a number of the city’s main transport hubs, you’re never more than a 10 minute journey from Clapham Junction, Victoria, Waterloo or London Bridge.
If trains aren’t quite your style, there are plenty of other options. Take your pick from buses, taxis and even river boats. That said, there’s nothing quite like a stroll along the river as the sun sets.
Local Amenities
With such a rich cultural and architectural history, it’s no surprise that Battersea offers an abundance of local amenities. Those looking for a breath of fresh air will certainly enjoy a walk through Battersea Park, while a variety of local restaurants offer plenty of selection when it comes to food and drink.
Regarding shopping, the re-purposed power station is now home to over 100 retailers and eateries. Who wouldn’t want to splash their cash in such a beautiful location? If you’d prefer a traditional buyer experience, you’ll find fresh produce, cafes and florists at the New Covent Garden Market.
