A Bit About Kennington

Kennington is a spot filled with pretty squares and Georgian architecture, where locals play bowls on the grass of Cleaver Square and visitors head for a drink in the famously compact Prince of Wales Pub. There’s a popular annual summer fair and a genteel air, with plenty of young families now mixing with city types who love the proximity of the town.

Kennington’s central location means that it was traditionally in earshot of the Division Bell in parliament. Today it’s a lively, diverse area with a strong sense of community spirit, green spaces, local arts and culture and a busy business scene.

History

Kennington was first recorded as Chenintune in the Domesday Book, which some believe means ‘king’s place’. It was given to the Black Prince in 1337, and a royal palace was built in his honour. The palace is now a manor, and the area became popular when Westminster Bridge was opened in 1750. By 1818, the existing street layout was in place and the village became a suburb whilst retaining semi-rural elements.

Location

Kennington is one of the best-kept secrets of inner London, located between the River Thames and the A3. In Zone 2 on the Northern Line, its postcode is SE11. It’s a great spot for public transport, with regular buses, taxis, and trains. It’s also well-served for bicycle routes.

Thanks to its location in the London Borough of Lambeth, there are night buses and the Underground services run every few minutes into town. Various A roads make it easy to drive from Kennington into London and out onto the surrounding motorway network. The area used to be so busy that it was described in the 1920s as the Clapham Junction of London’s southern roads. However, traffic calming measures have since restored the peace of the area and allowed traffic to flow freely, with plenty of space for pedestrians and cyclists.

Local Amenities

Some of the most notable things about Kennington are the Oval Cricket Ground, the Henry Moore Sculpture, which sits on the Brandon Estate and various blue plaques that mark the alumni of the area, including Charlie Chaplin.

There are plenty of independent shops, restaurants, cafes and bars, a theatre, a leisure centre and excellent amenities for visitors and locals alike. The area is also notable for its attractive and well-used green spaces, not to mention a busy calendar of community events, arts, mini-festivals and markets.
