A Bit About Lambeth

Lambeth is a borough in the inner city of London and historically part of Surrey. It extends to the south of the River Thames and includes Vauxhall, Kennington, Brixton, South Lambeth, Stockwell, and areas of Streatham, Norwood, Clapham and Balham.

History

Although Lambeth borough wasn’t formalised until the 1960s, the area has been a settlement since Roman times and the earliest recording of its original name, Lamhytha, was recorded in the Domesday Book of 1086. This quiet area was only lightly populated until the 1700s when its population worked mainly along the Thames. Once Westminster Bridge opened in 1750, the area was able to industrialise and grow, and it quickly became a large manufacturing area, followed by pottery, glass and machining industries.

In recent years it has become a central part of London and a heavily commercialised part of the city, packed with businesses, amenities and visitor attractions. There are plenty of residential blocks in Lambeth, with private and social housing, new apartments and original terrace homes still visible, in addition to attractive green spaces and historic churches, monuments and other attractions.

Location and Travel

It’s easy to travel around Lambeth as the area boasts every kind of public transport, including the London Underground, rail services, night buses, taxis, water taxis and more.

There are plenty of buses, well-laid-out bike routes and plenty of walking routes too, as the area is trying to invest in greener travel that incorporates the water’s edge and pedestrianised areas.

Taxis are plentiful, and the main railway stations include Vauxhall Station (also home to coaches), Clapham High Street Railway Station, Loughborough Junction Railway Station, Gipsy Hill Railway Station, Herne Hill, and Streatham Common.

Local Amenities

Lambeth has all of the amenities that you’d expect from a thriving inner-city London borough, including plenty of shops, restaurants, bars, clubs, sports venues, green spaces and more. Key attractions include the riverfront, which is home to the South Bank arts complex, the Imperial War Museum, the London Eye, the London Aquarium and various interesting museums.

The area is heavily residential and also home to various waterfront developments that face the City of Westminster and Houses of Parliament. It’s entirely integrated with the rest of London and a hugely popular tourist spot, as well as a key residential location for Londoners and London businesses.
