HR Consultant in Louth

History

Settlement in the area that is now Louth can be traced back to Saxon times. It takes its name from “Hlud” (meaning “loud”), as well as the local river.

The town once served as one of the country’s largest cattle markets and is still strongly connected to its agricultural history. Sheep were raised on the Wolds nearby, providing valuable wool to trade and sell. Louth’s architecture is primarily Georgian and Victorian, although you can find everything from a 15th Century church (with the tallest spire in England) to a modern industrial estate amongst its busy streets.

Modern companies make everything from plastic to electronic goods. The town’s layout, however, is still Medieval, and regularly hosts markets full of local produce. Louth is famous for its food and eateries. Famous residents include Alfred Tennyson, who attended the local grammar school.

Location and Travel

Louth is in East Lindsey, which is in Lincolnshire, about 150 miles from London. The A16 allows easy travel to nearby Grimsby. There are at least nine car parks in the town for those driving. There also is a bus station where Queen Street meets Church Street. Louth Railway Station closed in 1970. It was on the route between Grimsby and Boston.

A short distance from Louth, you can find the Wolds Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. Hubbard’s Hills are also nearby and ensure you can easily enjoy the natural world as well as the sometimes busy town. Louth Navigation Canal is no longer used to transport goods, but is a popular walking spot with interactive exhibits and memorabilia.

Amenities

Louth is renowned for its food culture. Even on days when the market is not open, there are still a range of specialist shops including bakeries, butchers, fishmongers and greengrocers. There is even a cheese shop. You can also dine and drink at various pubs, tearooms, cafes and restaurants.

Art lovers can enjoy the cinema, theatre and art gallery as well as various live music venues. Those with an interest in history can visit the museum as well as the many historic buildings and the library. Hiking and picnicking are possible at Hubbard’s Hills. Spout Yard provides outdoor space for walking next to the river, with play areas for children.

In Eastgate you can stand at the plaque that marks the meridian line dividing west and east – the same line that passes through Greenwich.
