A Bit About Mayfair

History

Today, Mayfair is known as one of the most affluent districts in London, but it was originally a collection of muddy fields. It takes its name from a literal fair, established during the 1600s on the orders of James II. It was in the Georgian era, however, as the country returned to stability following the Jacobite Rebellions, that people looked to build on the then outskirts of the city. Aristocrats who outgrew their old homes in Soho spread to Mayfair. During Victorian times, they would be joined by a new breed of successful business owners, each trying to outdo their neighbours with lavish new buildings. The aftermath of the First World War and the Great Depression saw the wealthy unable to maintain their Mayfair lifestyles, going from residential areas to offices and other business premises. It has since shifted back towards residential.

Location and Travel

Mayfair is officially part of the West End and the City of Westminster, right in the centre of London. Some of the city’s most notable roads: Park Lane, Regent Street, Oxford Street, Bond Street and Mount Street are all in the district or nearby. Grosvenor Square is in Mayfair, whilst Piccadilly is just to the south and Hyde Park to the west.

When travelling by Tube, the nearest stations are Green Park, Bond Street and Marble Arch, all just a short walk away. Mainline stations within walking distance include Marylebone, Charing Cross and Victoria (which can take you to Gatwick Airport). There are also nine or ten buses that have Mayfair on route.

Local Amenities

London landmarks around Mayfair include Hyde Park and Marble Arch. Historical and cultural sites include the Royal Academy of Arts, Apsley House, the Faraday Museum and Handel to Hendrix, celebrating two very different famous musicians who lived in the area. Mount Street, Bond Street and Oxford Street are all famous for their retail emporia, from high-end labels to iconic national brands. If you want a suit, Savile Row is globally renowned. The Burlington Arcade offers quirkier boutiques and Grays Antique Market offers even older wares.

Tea, coffee, wine, luxury chocolate – there is plenty to enjoy in Mayfair. You can find more economical options such as pizza or street food, but there are some truly indulgent restaurants as well. For the more traditionally British, there are also plenty of spots for afternoon tea, and pubs and bars for evening drinks. If you need to relax, you can visit a local spa.
