A Bit About Westminster

Westminster is one of the most famous areas of London and home to some of its biggest landmarks, including Westminster Abbey, the West End, Buckingham Palace, the Houses of Parliament and the renowned shopping districts of London. Interestingly, it was once an island above the Thames, when it was a boggy marsh. Today it attracts huge numbers of visitors every year, who mingle with the city workers who commute each day to the political and business centre of the UK. Westminster is hugely historic, fascinating and architecturally beautiful, and a huge tourist hotspot.

History

Westminster is one of London’s inner boroughs, sitting on the north bank of the River Thames in the West End. It’s a City in its own right and flanked by the City of London, Chelsea and Kensington. It historically belonged to Middlesex county and was established in 1965 as a borough. It spans famous neighbourhoods that include Paddington, Mayfair, Knightsbridge and South Kensington (in part), Maida Vale, Bayswater, Soho and St. John’s Wood. Belgravia is located here, in addition to other key estates, including Regent’s Park and the Cavendish estates.

Location and Travel

Located in the centre of London, it couldn’t be easier to travel, with Westminster Tube Station in the heart of Westminster City. It’s easy to walk to major attractions such as Big Ben and the National Art Gallery from here. Driving can be challenging as the city is so congested and will attract a charge as it sits in the middle of the Congestion Charge Zone (£15 per day at the time or writing). Buses and tubes are more recommended and run day and night.

Bikes can be hired as well, with numerous cycle lanes and pedestrian routes, which many people prefer for speed. You can also hail a taxi in just minutes but in rush hour you may end up just stuck in traffic.

Local Amenities

Not only is Westminster home to some of the biggest landmarks and attractions in London, but it’s also packed with all the amenities that people working, living and visiting could want, including shops, bars, cafes, restaurants, salons and spas, markets and more.

It’s not a notable area for nightlife, but it is very well known for its traditional pubs serving fine ales and excellent restaurants, which are busy after working hours with commuters and visitors, particularly those working in the parliamentary system in this historic part of London.
