Santa needs to get his elf data in shape for the GDPR

Wednesday December 13, 2017

It’s only six months to go until the new data laws come in – and whilst Santa’s getting ready to deliver billions of presents, he’s also got to think about how to make sure his employees’ personal data is ready for the GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation).

As CEO of a global logistics company, Santa employs millions of elves across the world. Some are on shelves reporting back to the North Pole about whether children have been naughty or nice, others are helping to make toys, and the rest are making sure everything is flowing smoothly.

What is the GDPR?

The EU has made a new data protection law and it comes into force across Europe in May 2018.

But it can take some work to make sure all the data is audited, categorised and recorded as to who has it and where it’s stored.

It’s important to think about where staff data might be, such as in filing cupboards, Excel spreadsheets or a Dropbox account.

What is personal data?

Each elf has a name and Santa holds confidential and sensitive information about them – such as their salary, bank details and health records.

Part of the GDPR talks about how the data is secured. So how can Santa make sure all the data he has about the elves is safe?

How The HR Dept can save Santa a headache

Santa also has to hire more elves towards the big night! He must keep all their CVs for the right amount of time and make sure they’re only kept for the minimum time necessary.
