History of Alfreton

Alfreton is a former coal-mining town with ancient roots, having been founded by King Alfred, and recorded as early as 1004. In the medieval period, it had a primarily agricultural economy, which evolved over time to include ironwork and mining. A rope-making industry also sprang up around Alfreton colliery and gained a reputation for exceptional quality. 

In the 1960s, the economy included services and factory work, and since then the local economy has evolved with various professional and services industries being well represented, together with retail, leisure and entertainment, and tourism.

Location and Travel

Alfreton is centrally located in the Peak District in the beautiful Amber Valley of Derbyshire. It’s perfectly located for nearby access to Nottingham, Sheffield, Chesterfield and Derby and well connected via roads and public transport. Alfreton Railway Station is served by Northern Rail and East Midlands Railway, with easy connections to other towns and cities in Derbyshire and beyond. 

There are also regular bus services linking Alfreton with Sutton in Ashfield, Matlock, Nether Hage, Derby and others. The A61 and the A38 are the main roads running into the town and it is only about 20 minutes into Derby by car, and around half an hour to Nottingham.

Alfreton has a vibrant tourism economy and you’ll find a busy town centre with plenty of shops, cafes and visitor attractions, cobbled streets and a range of family-friendly activities. There is a good provision of accommodation for business and leisure travellers, with independent B&Bs and hotels amongst the premises on offer. The town is located right in the heart of the Peak District, making it a wonderful green space. 

Alfreton is popular for its indoor market and annual events calendar which features various cultural, art, food and historic events as well as outdoor activities and sports. Nearby cultural attractions include the ever-popular Hardwick Hall and gardens.
