A bit about Ashbourne

History

Ashbourne is an historic market town and civil parish located in the Derbyshire Dales. The town has a population of around 9,000 permanent residents based upon 2019 estimates. This means it’s lively enough to have a bustling range of local amenities while remaining small enough to maintain a real sense of community.

Ashbourne has been home to a market selling local goods and produce since 1257 and was made a royal borough in 1276. Its historic market is still going strong, being open on the town’s High Street every Thursday and Saturday. Visitors to Ashbourne can enjoy purchasing a wide range of fresh, locally produced baked goods, vegetables, crafts and more from established local traders.

Location and Travel

Lying at the southern end of the Peak District, Ashbourne offers easy access to stunning countryside scenery. Its proximity to the Peak District means that Ashbourne is the closest town to the stunning valley of Dovedale, which is a National Trust site that attracts a million visitors each year [4], with great access to the River Dove, rolling hills and some of the best countryside England has to offer, Dovedale is an important historic site, having been continuously occupied since the Neolithic period.

In addition to enjoying easy access to the stunning Peak District countryside, Ashbourne is within easy travelling distance of other notable towns. Ashbourne is only a 30-minute drive up the A515 from the famous spa town of Buxton, where Buxton mineral water has been produced since the 19th century.

Ashbourne is also an easy drive from the larger cities of Stoke-on-Trent (accessible via the A50, A52 and A515), Nottingham (via the A52, A50, A517 and A610) and Loughborough (via the A50 and A52) making it perfect for those who want to work in a lively city but live somewhere more peaceful.

Shopping and Amenities

The town is famous for a range of sporting and cultural events. A range of activities engage the community throughout the summer months, with the Ashbourne Festival occurring in June and July each year. The festival runs for 17 days and contains performances and talks in areas as varied as music, literature and science.

Another annual event to look forward to is the Ashbourne show, which has been running for 129 years as of 2021. The Ashbourne Show is a traditional agricultural show where visitors can take part in a pet show and purchase locally produced crafts and goods.
