A bit about Bakewell

History

When you think of Bakewell, its famous tart might be one of the first things that springs to mind but the town also has plenty more tempting delights on offer. Before we dive into those, did you know that legend has it that the very first Bakewell tart was made by mistake? It is said that a cook was trying to make a jam tart but ended up with what is considered the first ever Bakewell tart.

Founded in the Anglo-Saxon times, Bakewell has a rich and charming history. The Parish Church dates to 920 and is a Grade I listed building with a cross in the churchyard which dates to the 9th century. Bakewell market was created in 1254, which cemented the town as an important trading centre and paved the way for so many local businesses today. From local breweries to luxurious restaurants and museums containing artefacts which explore the history of the local area, Bakewell has something that is certain to delight every visitor.

Location and Travel

Nestled in the Peak District National Park, this beautiful market town can be found on the banks of the River Wye in the Derbyshire Dales. Just 13 miles from Sheffield, Bakewell occupies a prime location close to a variety of popular tourist attractions, including Haddon Hall, the Monsal Trail, and Chatsworth House.

There are two Grade I listed bridges which cross the River Wye. The five-arched bridge was constructed in the 13th century and in 1664, the Holme Bridge was built to traverse the Wye on the north-eastern side of the town. In 1697, a chalybeate spring was discovered in Bakewell, which led to the construction of a bath house and a later bid in the 18th century to establish the area as a spa town.

Shopping and Amenities

Bakewell is home to a bustling outdoor market which takes place every Monday and a variety of local produce is available at the Bakewell Farmers Market. The heart of Bakewell is a treasure trove of local businesses specialising in everything from rare whiskies and outdoor clothing to high-end fashion and handmade chocolates.

The Bakewell Show is held every August and holds the title as one of the UK’s oldest agricultural events. Carnival Week occurs every July and classic literature lovers will find many similarities between Bakewell and Lambton, a scenic setting in Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice.
