HR Consultant in Belper

A Brief History of Belper

In Medieval times and beyond Belper was a centre for the nail-making industry before expanding rapidly during the Industrial Revolution to become one of the UK’s first mill towns. Due to its large cotton mills, many of which are still standing, Belper is part of the Derwent Valley Mills UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is popular with local visitors and tourists. Belper remained an important centre for textiles and hosiery well into the 20th century and still has some manufacturing facilities located in the town, though today the local economy is more reliant on retail and services.

Location and Travel

The town of Belper is located in the Amber Valley, towards the southern end of the country of Derbyshire, about 7 miles north of Derby, within easy reach of the stunning natural beauty of the Peak District National Park.

The town of Derby is approximately 20 minutes away by road, and Nottingham can be reached within 40 minutes. If you wish to visit a big city, Sheffield is under an hour away by both road and rail. Belper is located a short drive away from Junction 28 of the M1, offering excellent road links to both the north and the south of the UK. The town has regular bus services to Derby and surrounding villages, as well as longer routes to Manchester and London, and a train.

Shopping and Amenities

Belper has several large supermarkets located on the outskirts of the town, as well as a smaller one combining a post office within the town centre. There is a great selection of shops, from big brand high street names to local boutiques, as well as a popular farmer’s market that is held once a month in the historic Market Place.

A little way out of town is Heage Windmill, a six sailed stone tower mill that was built in 1797. It was restored to working order in 2002 and is now open to the public on a regular basis, selling flour milled on site. Other attractions in the area include Belper River Gardens, DeBradelei Mill antique centre, and Strutt’s North Mill, which contains a museum with information on the social, historic and industrial background of Belper and the surrounding area.
