A bit about Eastwood

History

Located in Nottinghamshire but only ten miles from the city of Derby, the area around Eastwood has been inhabited for centuries. It is even mentioned in the Domesday Book. In addition to good agricultural land, the presence of large and accessible coal deposits helped to drive its growth as a mining town during the Industrial Revolution.

Today, tourism forms an important part of Eastwood’s economy. It was the birthplace of the author D. H. Lawrence, and the so-called “Blue Line Trail” that follows places of local interest includes three sites connected to him, including a museum in the house where he was born. Lawrence’s famous novels include “Lady Chatterley’s Lover” and “Sons and Lovers”. The remains of Greasley Castle are also nearby and there are various historic churches.

Location and Travel

The main road in Eastwood is Nottingham Road, which boasts a wide variety of shops as well as leading towards the A610 and the M1 Motorway. This makes it easy to travel the eight miles to Nottingham by car. Langley Mill is the nearest railway station, with regular services between Nottingham and Leeds with stops in Sheffield. The Erewash Canal is nearby and Eastwood is less than 20 miles from East Midlands Airport.

Its close proximity to both Nottingham and Derby make it easy to access a wide range of shops and events. For example, Nottingham hosts the annual Splendour Festival. Both of these cities also contain museums, galleries and sites of historic interest.

Shopping and Amenities

Eastwood itself includes schools, hotels, cafes and restaurants. There are supermarkets, solicitors, beauty parlours and funeral directors. You can find shops selling everything from formal menswear through to floral bouquets, DIY equipment and furniture, and there is a retail park towards the edge of town. You can even visit a nearby brewery. The former British Coal headquarters at Eastwood Hall has been converted into a conference and event venue.

The area around the town is hilly, but with plenty of farmland. Colliers’ Wood is a community woodland where thousands of trees and numerous hedgerows were planted in the 1990s to help restore the countryside destroyed by mining. It is now home to a wide variety of birds. Eastwood is also just a few miles from the Bestwood Country Park Cycle Route, which allows you to explore woodland, lakes and meadows which are home to a range of wildlife. There are also several parks in Eastwood itself.
