A bit about Heanor

History

Situated in Derbyshire’s Amber Valley district, Heanor is a compact, charming town that is home to a variety of local businesses of all shapes and sizes. This historical hill-top town appears in the 1086 Domesday Book and its name derives from Old English and means ‘place at high ridge’. It is situated on a hill which rises out of a gentle valley formed by the Erewash River.

Sitting within the Nottinghamshire, Derbyshire and Yorkshire Coalfield National Character Area, Heanor is a mining town and is described in A Topographical Dictionary of England by Samuel Lewis, which was published in 1848, as ‘abounds with coal and ironstone’. It was also described in the same text as being home to many collieries which afforded ‘employment to more than 2,000 persons’. Heanor has also been a hub of production for centuries, manufacturing everything from bobbinet lace to hosiery, cotton and silk goods.

Location and Travel

Heanor merges into nearby Langley Mill and is located 8 miles from Derby, and just over 9 miles from Nottingham. In addition to being well-located, Heanor also benefits from excellent transport connections. Langley Mill railway station is just two miles away, which has regular services to Sheffield, Nottingham and beyond.

Bus routes connect Heanor to the likes of Derby, Nottingham, Mansfield and a variety of other local towns and cities. Heanor is also located just 18 miles from East Midlands International Airport.

Shopping and Amenities

Today, an industrial estate is a hub of manufacturing activity in Heanor, which is conveniently situated close to the primary road to the nearby town of Ilkeston. In fact, the manufacturing sector provides employment for more than 20% of the local working population. Several large retailers also maintain a presence in the town.

Heanor Market Place was established in the 1890s and today a small outdoor market is open every Friday and Saturday. While the parish doesn’t contain any conservation areas, approximately 30% of the town sits within the green belt. Additionally, its four wildlife sites and nature reserve are much-loved and of great local significance. Shipley Country Park is a steep wooded knoll with three lakes and borders the town towards the south and the west.
