A Bit About Ilkeston

History

Ilkeston is a busy town in Derbyshire, located on the River Erewash. Its population stands at around 39,000 people and it dates back to around the 6th century AD.

Ilkeston used to be known for its coal mining industries, lace making and textile industries and ironworking. Today, most of those have now entirely disappeared, with the exception of some artisan presence around the town. The town now has a strong service economy and is a popular spot for tourism. There are plans to build a business park near the town itself, and there are various units which are being developed into mixed service and industry businesses with local funding and support.

Location and Travel

The town is located close to both Nottingham and Derby and is a popular location for commuters. Travel is made easy by the proximity of the M1 and the border of Nottinghamshire. Ilkeston’s eastern boundary is located just two miles away from the western edge of Nottingham and falls under the city’s urban area.

Derby is just 9 miles away and Nottingham is only 8 miles away. Nearby areas include Kirk Hallam, Hallam, Cossall, Kimberley, Shipley, Babbington, West Hallam and Trowell.

The town has a new railway station which is less than a decade old, and an excellent bus service. The A610 and A609 both run through and around the town, making it an easy spot for commuting and onward travel by car, and there are plenty of car parks in and around Ilkeston.

Shopping and Amenities

Ilkeston is known for its charter market and fair, which is over 770 years old, with its charter being granted by the king in 1252. The street fair is one of the oldest and largest in the UK and a major attraction for tourists and locals alike. The town has amenities such as a cinema and bowling green, as well as a busy industrial and business scene and a thriving retail centre.

The area once had its own spa baths, which are still reminiscent of the town’s appealing architecture. Ilkeston is also surrounded by beautiful countryside with plenty of walks, bridleways, cycle paths and more in the vicinity. Visitors and locals enjoy attractions such as Victoria Park, Rutland Park, Pewitt Car Local Nature Reserve and Pewitt Car golf park. Wollaton Hall is a popular tourist attraction and Nottingham University main campus is also easily accessible.
