A bit about Matlock

History

Hall Lays Park has existed since Victorian times and has become an award-winning public space. Walk by the river, boat on the lake or play on the tennis courts. There is even a skate park. There are four other public parks in the area to enjoy as well. Other protected areas include Denefields, which is a haven for wildlife.

Local shops include small and independent boutiques as well as more recognisable high street names. Crown Square is the centre for shopping and dining, with a host of restaurants and cafes. There’s also a leisure centre with gym and swimming facilities. The Imperial Rooms can be hired for meetings and events.

In 1698 thermal springs were discovered nearby, leading to Matlock’s development as a spa town. It became famous for its hydros thanks to the industrialist John Smedley. He also founded an internationally renowned knitwear brand. Cromford Mills was the world’s first factory system and is part of the wider Derwent Valley World Heritage Site.

Location and Travel

Just a few miles from the Peak District National Park and nestled in the beauty of the Derwent Valley is Matlock, the county town of Derbyshire. Around 10,000 people call it home and it’s a popular spot with tourists. It also makes a good base for exploring the surrounding area, which is rich in both beautiful scenery and industrial heritage.

Derbyshire is easily accessed by the M1 and M6 motorway and Matlock is close to the A6. Matlock used to have its own tramline but it closed in 1927. You can still pay a penny to ride the vintage tram at the nearby Crich Tramway Village. The town is served by Matlock railway station, which runs regular services to major destinations including Derby and Nottingham. There is also a preserved steam railway for tourists and enthusiasts. Derby can also be reached by bus.

Shopping and Amenities

If you really want to appreciate the Derwent Valley you could view it from above with the help of a cable car at the Heights of Abraham. You can also explore the extensive cave network with the help of an audio guide. There are exhibitions for those who would rather not go underground.

Other popular tourist sites nearby include Matlock Farm Park, Gulliver’s Kingdom theme park, the Peak District Lead Mining Museum and Cromford Canal. Nearby Matlock Bath hosts an annual Illuminations event that was popular with Queen Victoria before she became queen.
