A bit about Pinxton

History

The village of Pinxton has a strong and proud mining heritage, which is still celebrated today. Coal was mined from as early as Tudor times but this escalated in the 18th century and Pinxton became a mining village. It was there that resident John King invented a mining safety device – the detaching hook – which became world-famous and is credited with saving the lives of many miners.

The John King Mining Wheel remains in the village today as a monument to the invention and the town’s mining past. Aside from mining, the village was also known for Pinxton Porcelain, a porcelain company created by John Coke and William Billingsley. Pinxton is a popular haunt for rail enthusiasts too, with people travelling to see the interesting engines which pass through at its level crossing.
