A Bit About Ripley

Ripley is a Derbyshire town steeped in industry and has had a close association with the coal mining and iron industries for many centuries. This brought great prosperity in the 18th Century thanks to Benjamin Outram who founded the Butterley Ironworks, which updated the local wooden tramways with cast-iron rails and supplied the cast-iron roof to Paddington Station.

Though many of the older buildings in Ripley have been demolished and replaced with new ones, there are still some handsome examples of 19th Century architecture, including Butterley Hall, which was once a grand family home but is now the headquarters of the Derbyshire Constabulary.

Location and Travel

Ripley is situated right in the middle of the country, with excellent access to the beautiful scenery of the Peak District National Park. The Park has some of the most beautiful countryside in the UK and offers a wide range of activities for those who love the great outdoors, including walking, cycling, camping, rock climbing, horse riding and water sports. Slightly closer to home, residents of Ripley can enjoy a ride on the Midland Railway at Butterley, which is a steam railway dedicated to the old Midland Line which ran through the area until 1968.

The shops and attractions of Derby are a 20-minute drive away, and the city of Nottingham can be reached by road within 30 minutes. The A38 is very close by, offering a quick link to the M1 and routes north and south. Ripley doesn’t have its own train station, but both Belper and Ambergate can be reached by road within ten minutes. There are frequent bus services available, linking Ripley to Derby, Chesterfield, Nottingham and Manchester.

Shopping and Amenities

Ripley has two large supermarkets on its outskirts, as well as a smaller one located on the High Street in the middle of town. The town centre also boasts four pleasant pubs, clothes shops, several convenience stores, a local butcher, cafes and sandwich shops, and a selection of takeaways serving a wide range of cuisine, from Italian to Cantonese. If you prefer to dine in there are a selection of restaurants to choose from, offering the Mediterranean, European, Indian, Chinese and traditional British fare.
